WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SCIENCE IN Ethiopia

Africa Science Week will take place in Ethiopia from 14-20 December 2019. It is organized by Dr. Binyam Sisay Mendisu (NEF ambassador 2017-2019), and Dr. Mariamawit Yonathan Yeshak (NEF ambassador 2015-2017) in collaboration with various partners. The main focus of Africa science week celebration will be on the role of women in science and promoting gender-sensitive STEAM education. Accordingly, activities are planned to advocate and encourage girls/women to pursue a career in science, recognize three successful women scientists in Ethiopia and learn from their experiences. In addition to this, a trip to a small town and rural areas in the southwestern part of the country is planned to visit a newly established university and organize a hands-on workshop with high school students. Early-career women science leaders from Ethiopian Young Academy of Sciences (EtYAS) will travel to Jinka to engage with hands-on workshop with high school students and to inspire them pursue their dream career in science. The main partners of the science week celebration include the Ethiopian Young Academy of Science (EtYAS) in which both NEF ambassadors are members of the executive committee, Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS) and UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa. We will also be working closely with Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology in Ethiopia. Furthermore, we are currently in discussion with private companies such as Gebeya Inc. to decide on their involvement and the support that they could provide.
