Dr. Lwidiko Edward MD is a medical doctor, currently doing his PhD on Malaria in Uppsala University. He is also a direcor of ProjeKt Inspire, a social enterprise whose vision is to improve the state of STEM education in Tanzania, and providing career guidance and inspiration for young adults and kids, with a niche in STEM careers, (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics).

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SCIENCE IN Tanzania

According to the “National Development Vision 2025” document in Tanzania, it identifies Science and Technology as pillars for innovation and competitiveness towards making Tanzania semi- industrialized, middle-income economy by 2025. Studies in Tanzania have shown a significant skills miss-match with the vision that will prevent the country to attain the aspired goals. When Tanzania is compared with other countries who are in middle income bracket, its seen that they had about 3.4% of their working class in Sciences by the time they entered the middle-income bracket, and Tanzania will have only 0.25%. In order to implement the Tanzanian Vision 2025, science and technology has to be incorporated through creation of generation of young people with highly developed problem.

Digital Skills (Coding) workshop.

9:00 – 4:30

Almuntazir School – Upanga, UN Road – Dar Es salaam

This will be a one-day coding workshop for secondary school female students from 20 different schools in Dar es salaam, and will be held at Almuntazir Schools, Upanga. This would be a great avenue to expose students to the digital world and how that can be used to the development.

Science Fair + Teachers STEM Workshop

8:00 – 6:00

Bombo Primary school – Tanga

1. Science fair for primary school pupils: Where we will extend invitation to nearby primary 10 schools to bring 10 representative pupils, whom may be accompanied with a teacher to have a total of 100 pupils. They will participate in guided science projects with science kits in chemistry, electricity and technology, and an interactive science and technology career discussion. 2. Science teachers’ workshop: In partnership with Technorama from Switzerland, we will conduct parallel teacher’s capacity building workshop on pedagogical approaches to teaching science to pupils. We will invite two science teachers from each of the 10 schools that will bring pupils for this session. 3. Technology workshop with secondary school girls; It will involve an average of 20 to 30 girls with interest in coding/ robotics/ technology, whom will have an intimate session. The theme will be “using drones for nature conservation". The girls will get an opportunity to fly the mini drones in doors and also, do some outdoor activities.

Awarding Women in STEM + Launching of STEM for Africa Platform

Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology – Arusha

Here is where we will have the awarding of women in science, together with Launching of STEM for Africa Platform, which is an initiative of NM-AIST students (Masters and PhD) from 12 countries in Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Nigeria, Malawi, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Zambia). It is rare to see African scientists recognized both on the international and local stage. For women in science, it is even worse as it is very hard to identify women scientists who are advancing science and technology in their countries or globally. The Women in Science celebration is an attempt to start recognizing women in science in Tanzania.
