WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SCIENCE IN Zimbabwe
The second Science, Technology and Innovation Policy of Zimbabwe was launched by the Government of Zimbabwe in 2012 with help of organizations such as UNESCO and African Technology Policy Studies (ATPS) Institute. This was an update of its 2005 version, which (now) takes into account new technological developments as well as addresses new national challenges that had emerged. The policy hinges on the importance of mainstreaming STEM in all sectors of the economy, and ensures that everyone benefits from the acquisition and utilization of available technology in improving quality of life. The Policy presents six primal goals through which all efforts should be channeled. These are:
• Strengthen capacity development in STI.
• Learn and utilise emergent technologies to accelerate development.
• Accelerate Commercialization of Research Results.
• Search for scientific solutions to global environmental challenges.
• Mobilize resources and Popularize science and technology.
• Foster international collaboration in STI.
Zimbabwe’s innovation policies are up to date; however, more thought is needed around better coordination of various implementation activities. There is also need for better collaboration among the entities involved, which will reduce fragmentation and create more measurable and sustainable impact. Programmes such as Africa Science Week are key in helping the country achieve these objectives, and it is commendable that the government has given much support to these programmes in various ways (the current Ambassador can testify) and will surely continue to do so.
